Smile Design

The smile design that emerges to create a more aesthetic smile is the process of obtaining a more pleasant smile by ensuring that the teeth, lips and gums appear in harmony with each other. The front two teeth are longer in females. In males, the teeth show a homogeneous distribution. Based on this, physicians perform the smile design by examining the proportion, shape and size of the teeth and gums and solving the problems that arise. When starting the smile design, the dentist records the patient’s characteristics and considers many data from skin color to face shape and lip shape. Specialists focusing on the patient’s dental records, tooth sizes and a few tooth alignments transfer the data they have obtained to the laboratory environment.

Color and deformities in the teeth can cause problems up to psychological disorders in the individual. With the development of aesthetic and restorative materials in dentistry, many shape, color and position disorders can be easily resolved. Smile Design assumes a very important function here.

What is Smile Design?

Smile design is to renew your ideal smile by applying medicine and art together. It is to plan a healthy smile by combining some of your personal wishes with health and naturalness.

Other factors when determining the aesthetic smile expression that suits you: Your facial features, your gender, your age, your smile symmetry, the order and colors of your teeth, your lips, your gums

Smile design is first started by determining which geometric shape your face line fits. The lines on the person’s face contain the passwords of which form the tooth should be selected. Below are the main face shapes and corresponding tooth forms:

Male and female anatomy are different from each other. In males, facial features are sharper and more pronounced. The proportion of forehead nose to chin tip differs with the female face. In women, the transitions are softer, the nose and brow arches are more obscure. The teeth have the same parallelism.

Aesthetic Smile in Women: The corners of the teeth turn softer, The smile line is curved upwards, The two teeth in the middle are slightly longer than the teeth on the side, There are tiny gaps between the corners of the neighboring teeth.

Aesthetic Smile in Men: Neighboring teeth join in a straighter line, The lines of the teeth are more prominent, The smile line is straighter.

How Many Types of Aesthetic Smile Expressions Are There?
In general, smile expressions are collected under three main headings. These basic categories also have different variations within themselves:

1-Attractive Smile (Sexy Smile)

In this category, the anterior teeth are noticeably longer than the lateral teeth. In fact, this is already the case in young individuals, since the anterior incisors are the first teeth to erupt, they wear out over time and their length becomes shorter. This brings with it an aged look. In order to have an attractive smile, the front teeth should be longer than the others. This design of the front teeth will give you a young, dynamic and attractive smile. This category is suitable for individuals of a young age.

2-Intellectual Smile (Sophisticated Smile)

The teeth are arranged on a horizontal straight line. The intellectual smile gives the face a mature and knowledgeable expression. This smile accentuates the lower part of the face more. When the teeth first erupt at young ages, their lengths are different from each other. In middle age, the teeth are of equal length. Thanks to aesthetic dentistry, we can take advantage of this disadvantageous situation and design a mature, knowledgeable and intellectual smile.

3-Sporty Smile

Between Intellectual and Attractive smile. The central incisors are slightly longer than the lateral incisors. The sporty smile design gives your face an unusual, sincere and warm expression. This smile is not as serious as an intellectual smile, and it is not as childish and youthful as an attractive smile design.

Criteria for Smile Design

These criteria can be grouped under the following headings:

Horizontal Alignment

In an ideal smile, the line passing through the pupils and the line passing through the middle of the teeth are often parallel to each other.

Symmetry

Symmetry is very important as the discrepancy in the shape and size of the anterior incisors is easily noticed. In this respect, providing symmetry as much as the facial features allow adds an extra charm to the smile.

Aesthetic Smile Line

The curve drawn to connect the incisors of the front teeth should match the curvature of the lower lip. The more harmony in these lines is achieved, the more the person will have a young and attractive smile.

Gum Line

The gum line that appears when you smile should be parallel to the upper lip line. The gum line is like the frame surrounding a beautiful painting. It adds meaning to your smile.

Smile Width

For an aesthetic smile, it should be ensured that the teeth on the back are visible in certain proportions within the smile line. If this is not provided, the dark areas in the corners of the mouth do not create a pleasant appearance.

Embrashurs

The areas called embrasures are the natural and triangular spaces between the tips of the teeth. For an aesthetic and ideal smile, the dimensions of the embrasures should increase from the anterior teeth to the posterior teeth.

Golden Ratios

The width and height of the upper incisors in the visible region should be 1/16 of the width and height of the face, respectively. Also, there is the ratio known as the number of phi (φ=1.618…) between some geometric shapes in nature. For an aesthetic smile, teeth should also follow this rule. For example, the ratio between the widths of the anterior incisors and the lateral incisors (1.618/1=1.618… =phi number), the ratio between the widths of the canines and the lateral incisors (0.618/1 = 0.618, which is the result obtained from the division of the phi number by one, or phi number). It is equal to the number obtained by subtracting 1 from the number.

Tooth Ratio

The ratios of the widths to the heights of the two front teeth must still match the golden ratio, i.e. 0.618/1 = 0.618, which is equal to the result obtained by dividing 1 by the phi number. The apparent length of the tooth should always be greater than its width.

Shadows on the Teeth

Teeth are not dominated by a single color. Natural teeth are not pure white. The color and transparency of the tooth varies according to the regions. If we examine the body of a tooth in three regions,

1-Cervical Neck Region: It is yellowish even in the brightest and whitest smiles.

2-Middle Region: It is less yellowish.

3-Cutting Part: It is transparent in varying proportions and has a gray appearance.
